Rusty, Wednesday, Takeru, and Neko...RIP

as i get ready for cashew to come into my life, i can't help but think back about my dog Rusty. i think about her often. she was my sister. we shared 13 years together. we had so many fond memories together.

yes, she had a skin problem and kinda stunk. but, she was the sweetest thing in the world. she was so smart. i remember when i was about 11-12, i got in trouble with my mom and got one of those asian beat downs. i was so upset that i had to go to sleep from crying so hard. rusty got on top of me and licked the tears off of my face to comfort me.

up until she was about 3-4 years old, she and i used to play hide-n-seek in the house.

she used to have her own way of talking to us, both verbal and non-verbal.

she used to sleep with our cats and endured it when wednesday would try to lick and clean her face.

i was hard on her sometimes, but she still loved me and i still loved her....even though she always insisted on drinking water from the garage sink. it's funny because wednesday always drank from the bathroom sinks....we had weird pets.

she ate one of my pot brownies on accident once.....

we went as a family when it was time for her to go. we tried to hold on to her for as long as we could, but it was clear that we needed to let her go and die with dignity. watching her go is still one of my most traumatic memories. even though it was very peaceful, i still clearly remember petting her head and the moment when dr. paul said she had passed. it's really difficult to comprehend when a loved one passes before your eyes. 6 years after her death, my eyes still well up with tears when i think about that moment.

each pet that has passed has taken a huge chunk of my heart with them. i tried my hardest to get wednesday through her kidney failure. it still haunts me that takeru, my bestest buddy, died so tragically. i don't really mention neko, but she was our really old cat. she passed away while i was in japan.

they can never be replaced in my heart. but, i am ready to welcome a new best friend into my life. we'll create more memories together, and she will represent this funky time of my life of searching for my adult self and trying to establish a career and a LIFE.

we're japanese, so we have one of those little buddhist altar things for our ancestors...and our pets! before i pick cashew up on saturday, i plan to burn some incense in their memories and pray that they watch over my new little girl.

i love my pets. my life is NEVER complete without a little buddy. i'm so excited to start this new chapter with cashew!

i can't wait to meet her in person! 2 more days to go!
